Gerritt Rutgers earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, California. At Hastings, he earned the rare honor of serving as a judicial extern clerk to the Honorable Robert Schnacke of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Excelling in trial advocacy during moot court competitions, Mr. Rutgers sought out a more realistic environment to hone his skills. During his last year of school, he was granted a position as a certified law student in the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. Prior to graduating law school, he had tried his first case before a jury.

Immediately following his graduation, Mr. Rutgers went to work as a Deputy Los Angeles County Public Defender for nearly five years. He returned to the Bay Area where he was raised and began a successful private practice dedicated exclusively to criminal defense in 1995. Mr. Rutgers is a Certified Specialist in Criminal Law as recognized by the California Board of Legal Specialization. He was also recognized as a “Super Lawyer” rated among the top 5% of Northern California lawyers by San Francisco Magazine.
